LECTURE

TEDx Košice (SK): From backyard to Mars

If you want to get inspirational ideas, you should  attend TEDx talks. It's a globally popular conference format with something for everyone. The Košice TEDx was held online due to the pandemic situation at the time. My talk was about sleep, meditation and overcoming difficult life situations. I focused on why we actually need sleep, why it’s helpful and why I fall asleep excited and wake up impatient.

LECTURE

TEDxYouth@Bratislava (SK): Interface

The TEDxYouth event is organised by a group of young enthusiastic people from Bratislava. The target group of this TEDx format are high school and university students, for whom the information about sleep is very important, as it affects their biorhythm and productivity, which are under high demands nowadays. My lecture, even though it was more scientific than typical TEDx talks, fortunately didn't put anyone to sleep. The audience was literally moved by it and there was a nice response, which I was very pleased about.

LECTURE

Pohoda Festival (SK)

Pohoda is one of the biggest festivals in Slovakia, and it also has a good international reputation. Its uniqueness lies in the fact that apart from musical entertainment, it also offers a number of literary, artistic and discussion tents. In my lecture I discussed the vital switching between brain states - sleep and wakefulness. The audience was able to see the first 3D recording of all the cells of the brain during sleep, wakefulness and the transitions between them, which we published in Science. I also got questions about the topic after the lecture, over beers, or during concerts, which shows that people were interested in the topic and I appreciate that.

5th Vedatour Bratislava (SK)

Vedátor is a project that popularises science and spreads knowledge among young people. The project has also created a great Vedátor podcast with the support of SME, as well as workshops and lectures called Vedatour organised mainly in Bratislava. Vedatour are intimate, but regular meetings, led by young, successful Slovak scientists or students of scientific disciplines. In my talk (Evolution of sleep and the brain. Sleeping worms reveal how we wake up) I focused on sleeping worms and their help in the study of the human brain and sleep. There was a lively discussion, showing that Slovaks enjoy science and know how to think.
