MENTOR

I aspire to be a scientist who makes science popular

I know I don't want to be a scientist who finds out interesting information, writes it down and bundles it into a binder. My goal is to present the information I have gathered further and in a form that is engaging to the audience and has some added value for the viewer or reader. It's not easy, but it can be done. It requires constant work on your speech and also criticism from those more experienced. If they tell you that they didn't understand your article or lecture, they are giving you the opportunity to move forward and bypass those who can't take or work with criticism.

To invent is not enough. You need to sell yourself

Nowadays, if a scientist wants to gain fans, an audience or get a sponsor, simply having good ideas or groundbreaking solutions is not enough. If you can't sell your ideas to the public with words or an inspiring talk, you won't move forward. This was true for me as well. Every grant or scholarship I got, I had to fight for. I had to consider how I would write the texts for the project, how I would perform. What I will release into the world of social media, to whom, how often. I learned how to present myself and my work. I can teach you to do the same.

My experience, your inspiration (maybe)

What helped my lecturing and writing greatly were the seminars I attended as a part of the scholarships I received during my studies. I took a course in science communication in New York, a course in scientific writing in Klosterneuburg, Austria, taught courses on lecturing or scientific writing and wrote dozens of essays. I'm not bragging, I’m just showing my purposeful journey towards my dream of becoming a science writer. If you have a similar dream, or want to better present your grants, projects, or resume, I'd be happy to help you through mentoring.

Hosť Andrey Poláčkovej radio show in Rádio Slovensko

We talked about research on states of consciousness, psychedelics, sleep, wakefulness and switching between these states. In radio interviews, it is even more important to express oneself clearly and comprehensibly. The listener is doing other activities alongside your words and it is up to you how strongly you engage and immerse them in the topic. If you have an interview or a podcast coming up, don't underestimate the preparation – it's important. I'll help you prepare and perform authentically.

5th Vedatour in Bratislava

The Vedatour evening science lecture sessions with scientists are a great success, one of the reasons being that the speakers themselves speak engagingly, simplify scientific knowledge and translate it into everyday life. Do you know how I started my lecture? "I'm a scientist who makes worms fall asleep, and I talk like one." After that, no one in the audience fell asleep.

Meditation will help you get to know yourself

Meditation offers me a different way of looking at the world. It is a time for mental silence and not thinking. Alternating between thinking and not thinking brings new ideas, frees you from stereotypes, improves sleep and attention. Thanks to science, I know how to gather and assess information. Thanks to meditation, I know how to look at it with a clear head and understand it correctly. Meditation can help you to get to know yourself more deeply, and it can be learned. I teach meditation as a part of my mentoring, and I can also diagnose what is preventing you from meditating.

To have a meditation mentor is normal

I'm not writing this because I want to try a secret marketing tactic on you right now. The ability to meditate is innate. What might be preventing you from meditating is stress, anxiety, past experiences, certain aspects of your upbringing and culture, poor sleep and disharmony of body or mind. But together we can find a way for you to start meditating again. Meditation is suitable for everyone, there is no discrimination of gender or age. Even though I most often mentor meditation one-on-one, I also have experience in group meditation and mentoring several people at once. Language is not a barrier either, as I am fluent in Slovak, German and English.

Trochu inak s Adelou: Tomáš Eichler

SATURDAY, October 26, 2019, 8:10 P.M.
We covered the topic of meditation a bit more in the TV show Trochu Inak with Adela Vinczeová. If you're interested in  how I meditate, why I sleep naked, and why I've gotten used to being myself, I  recommend you to watch the whole show on YouTube. In addition to meditation, we also discussed my research on sleeping worms from a different view and with a pinch of humour.

You can watch the whole show in the RTVS archive.

A bit more about me as a mentor

I don't have any special certificate for mentoring meditation, lecturing or writing. However, I go into everything I do fully and responsibly. My sincere interest in teaching someone and moving them forward stems from everything I have done in my life so far. For 22 years I have practiced and trained karate and martial arts. I am active in sports even today, rowing on the IMPerfectos team, with whom we won the Dragon Boat Championship in Austria. Sport has helped me gain a sense of team spirit, and gave me valuable experience in leading teams or individuals. In mentoring, I draw from my knowledge from studying neurogenetics, and my own experience with meditation, which I am actively practicing, helps as well.

You can find a list of my performances in the Tomáš the guest section as well.
